Dale Earnhardt Jr. Shines in New Role as Race-Winning Crew Chief

When regular crew chief Mardy Lindley was suspended for loose lug nuts, Dale Earnhardt Jr. stepped in to lead the No. 88 team at Pocono Raceway, where they won with Connor Zilisch. Lindley had suggested the idea via text to Earnhardt, who has a historic connection with the Lindleys through racing legacies. With Lindley’s successful track record, Earnhardt embraced the competitive challenge and enjoyed being hands-on after predominantly observing as an owner/broadcaster.

While admitting he didn’t handle all technical aspects, Earnhardt was actively involved in in-race strategy and coaching Zilisch. Although he wouldn’t actively seek out the role again, he’d be willing to step up if needed. Earnhardt found his increased involvement energizing and impactful, especially in keeping the team motivated and supporting Zilisch on-track. The experience reignited his competitive spirit and allowed him to contribute meaningfully to the team’s success at Pocono.
